ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (AIR)


Applications are open for our AIR program. We are accepting artists, writers, illustrators, designers, and creatives for residencies in RISO, Silkscreen, and Studio projects. 

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Our residency program is designed for artists, writers, designers, or photographers who want to develop their practice, learn new print techniques, or work on specific projects. All residents may receive training on new equipment and attend workshops to develop their individual projects and make new work. There are no specific outcome requirements and we encourage artists to use this time and space to learn and explore. 

We offer 3 different residency types- RISO, Silkscreen, and Studio. We accept one resident per category at a time to provide the most access to equipment and tools. All residents receive dedicated space in a shared studio and optional trainings. 

We encourage our residents to make use of this time to develop a project but it could also be used for experimentation and learning. There are no required outcomes of this residency.

Residents may apply as individuals or teams. 

Applications accepted on a rolling basis and residents will be notified of their acceptance and scheduling permits. RSA will work with our residents on timing and planning.

RISO RESIDENCY


RISO Residents will have training on both our machines: an MH 9450 Dual Drum RISO Duplicator, and an EZ Single Drum Duplicator. 

RISO Residents should be making work primarily with the Duplicators, but training on other machines and silkscreening tools is encouraged.

*Please note- our EZ and MH drums are not compatible and each machine only takes the pallet listed.

Both machines print up to 11x17” and can print directly from computer or scanner bed.

Costs:
$250 for 1 week
$400 for 2 weeks
$600 for 4 weeks

Residents supply their own paper.
No additional fees for RISO printing or master making

SILKSCREEN RESIDENCY


Silkscreen Residents may use our analog photo emulsion lab or receive training on RISO Silkscreening Series equipment.

Photo Emulsion Lab

- Screens (various sizes)
- Ulano 925WR emulsion (textile or paper)
- Scoop coaters (various sizes)
- Darkroom
- Screen drying cabinet

Printing:

-2 Vacuum tables with hinge clamps 
-Assorted drying racks 
-1 arm vacuum press (oversize printing)

$350 for 1 week
$500 for 2 weeks
$800 for 4 weeks

Silkscreen artists provide their own paper, apparel, and ink, and cover the costs of their screen burning for individual projects.

STUDIO RESIDENCY


Studio Residents receive dedicated space in one of our 2 shared non print studios to focus on individual projects.

Applicants may includes writers, designers, or visual artists, who would like to learn a bit about printmaking but work primarily outside the mediums of RISO or silkscreening.

Studio Residents may take the shared workshops and trainings to advance their knowledge and skillset.

Cost:
$400 for two weeks
$600 for four weeks

Opportunity:

Each resident will  receive dedicated work and storage space in our 1500sf shared studio. We want to foster an exchange of skills and knowlege and give our residents an opportunity to get to know each other and the Portland art community.

Artists are welcome to include workshop or exhibition proposals are part of their projects. We split workshops 70/30 with guest teachers, and gallery sales are split 60/40, (artist takes the larger %)

*If there is a material or tool that would make your residency better, please fill out the special request form on your application.  


Access:

Residents will have access to the studio 11am-7pm, Wed-Sun. The studios are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the gallery/ RISO studio is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays 12-6.  Artist storage and the screen printing studio are private.

We may schedule workshops, open studio sessions, and exhibition openings during residency periods, depending on resource needs and space. Residents may attend these workshops and events at no additional cost. 

Our space is ADA accessible but printmaking is a very physically demanding medium and may be unsafe or difficult for some artists to change RISO color drums or burn and print silkscreen screens. If you need special assistance please reach out for accommodations.

We are located on the corner of Ladd’s Addition in SE Portland OR. There are lots of coffee and food options within walking distance, as well as vintage and book stores, galleries, and more to visit. Our studio gets decent foot traffic. If you are visiting from out of town we’ll provide many recommendations :)

Lodging:


We accept both local and traveling artists. At this time we cannot provide lodging for out of town residents, but do provide a 50% discount on our program fees to artists from outside of Oregon to help offset the cost of travel and lodging. 

Costs:

Residents will be expected to pay the entire program fee for their chosen residency type before beginning their program. They will also be responsible for their travel and lodging expenses, meals, and individual project materials- paper, apparel, ink, and silk screen burning costs
